Quote Block

The Quote block is used to add quoted content to a page in a clear, structured way. It creates a semantic blockquote element that tells browsers, search engines, and assistive technologies that the content is a quotation.

Why use the Quote block

Use the Quote block when you need to:

  • Present a quotation or testimonial as quoted content
  • Improve accessibility by clearly identifying quoted text
  • Add visual emphasis without breaking semantic structure
  • Support screen readers and other assistive technologies

Unlike styling a paragraph to look like a quote, the Quote block communicates meaning. That distinction matters for accessibility, search engines, and long-term content quality.

How to use the block

Start by adding the Quote block to the page. Learn how to add blocks.

Once the block is added, editors typically:

  • Enter the quoted text inside the block
  • Add attribution (such as a name or source) using a new Paragraph block inside the block
  • Adjust alignment or width from the block toolbar
  • Apply spacing or color styles to match the layout

The Quote block is a wrapper block, meaning it can contain inner blocks. By default, it includes a Paragraph block, and it’s best to limit inner content to simple text blocks such as Paragraphs or Lists.

Quote block vs. Pullquote block

Two different blocks are available for quoted content: Quote and Pullquote.

  • Use the Quote block when the quote should quietly support the surrounding content and remain part of the natural reading flow.
  • Use the Pullquote block when the quote should grab attention and stand out visually.

The Quote block is simple and structural, with minimal visual styling. Pullquotes are designed for stronger editorial emphasis and are typically used more sparingly.

Block toolbar

The block toolbar appears above the Quote block when it’s selected.

Available options

  • Text alignment: Align the quote left, center, or right
  • Block width: Control how wide the quote appears within the layout

These controls affect layout and alignment only. They do not change the meaning or structure of the quote.

Block settings

The Quote block does not include additional settings in the block settings sidebar.

This block is intentionally simple and relies on the design system to manage typography and presentation.

Block styles

In Block Settings, the Styles tab includes additional controls to adjust the appearance of the Quote block.

Color

Choose a text color from the available options to match the design system and ensure sufficient contrast.

Tip: Quotes are still body text. Always choose colors that remain readable and accessible.

Dimensions

Use Dimensions to control spacing around the Quote block:

  • Padding: Adds space inside the quote container
  • Margin: Controls space above and below the quote

Use spacing intentionally to help the quote stand apart without disrupting page flow.

Accessibility and content structure

The Quote block outputs semantic blockquote markup, which clearly identifies quoted content to assistive technologies.

Key things to know:

  • Screen readers announce quoted content differently than standard paragraphs
  • Search engines recognize blockquotes as quotations, not primary page content
  • The Quote block improves document structure when used correctly

Tips for editors

Use the Quote block for structure, not decoration

Tip: If the text isn’t actually a quote, use a Paragraph block with styles instead. The Quote block should only be used for quoted content.

Keep quotes concise

Tip: Quotes are easier to scan when they’re short and focused. Long quotations can feel heavy and interrupt reading flow.

Don’t fight the typography

Tip: You can’t change font size inside a Quote block — and that’s intentional. Trust the design system to handle typography consistently.

Use spacing thoughtfully

Tip: Use margin and padding to give quotes breathing room, but avoid excessive spacing that disconnects them from surrounding content.
