Embed Block

The Embed block lets you display content from external platforms directly within your page or post. This includes videos, social media posts, audio, and more — all without uploading files to your site.

Why use the Embed block

Use the Embed block when you want to:

  • Add videos, posts, or media from third-party platforms
  • Keep your site lightweight by not uploading large media files
  • Share content from social or external sources
  • Enhance content with rich media like video or audio

Embedding is a quick and efficient way to bring external content into your site while keeping everything easy to manage. Instead of hosting the content yourself, you simply paste a link. WordPress then pulls in and displays that content for you.

How to use the block

Once the block is added, editors typically:

  • Paste a URL from a supported service
  • Preview the embedded content
  • Adjust layout and spacing as needed

You can add embedded content in a few ways:

  • Add the Embed block and paste a URL from any supported service
  • Add a specific embed variation (like YouTube or Vimeo) and paste the URL
  • Paste a supported URL directly into a new paragraph block — it will automatically convert into the correct embed

All approaches work the same — use whichever fits your workflow.

Supported platforms

The block toolbar appears above the Embed block when it’s selected.

  • Margin: Adds space around the embedded content to help separate it from other elements on the page.

Accessibility and content structure

Embedded content is managed by the external platform, but there are still a few things to consider:

  • Make sure embedded content supports your page’s purpose and context
  • Avoid relying on embedded content alone to convey critical information
  • Ensure surrounding text provides enough context for all users

Use embeds intentionally

Only embed content that adds value. Too many embeds can slow down the page and distract from your main content.

Check the source

Embedded content depends on the external platform. If the content is removed or changed, it may no longer display correctly.

Keep layout in mind

Some embeds (especially videos) work best at larger widths. Use Block width and spacing to ensure they fit well within your layout.

Be aware of global video styling

Video embeds from platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, and Wistia may include customized styling applied across the site. This can include a thumbnail image with a styled play button overlay. This styling is handled automatically and helps maintain a consistent look and feel.
