Importance of Accessible Language
Language that is challenging to read and understand can be a barrier for all users, specifically for those with cognitive disabilities, low reading literacy, those who are unfamiliar with the topic or not fluent in the language. Using plain language will help reduce barriers by allowing content to be easily consumed and understood. Plain language can also improve user experience and interaction, with clear headings and labels that simplify navigation and operation of a website.
Using Understandable Language
- Use the proper vocabulary and plain language that is easy for anyone to understand.
- To emphasize words, use bold characters. Do not use title headings (i.e. tags such as H1, H2 or H3) for this purpose.
- Avoid overly complex words, jargon, and acronyms, or provide explanations when they need to be used.
- Put information in logical order, with the important details first.
- Use an active voice.
- Avoid extended blocks of unbroken text.
- Write descriptive headings and labels.
