Paragraph Block

The Paragraph block is the foundation of most page content. You’ll use it for body copy, short descriptions, and supporting text throughout a site. While it looks simple, the Paragraph block plays an important role in readability, accessibility, and content consistency.

Why use the Paragraph block

Use the Paragraph block whenever you need to add standard text content to a page.

It’s ideal for:

  • Body copy and long-form content
  • Introductory or supporting text beneath headings
  • Descriptions, summaries, and explanatory content
  • Accessible, readable text that adapts well across devices

Paragraphs are meant to be read. Keeping them clean, simple, and well-spaced makes content easier to scan and understand.

How to use the block

Start by adding the Paragraph block to the page. Learn how to add blocks.

Once the block is added, editors typically:

  • Enter or paste body text
  • Apply light inline formatting (bold, italics, links)
  • Adjust spacing or styles to support readability

Block toolbar

The block toolbar appears above the Paragraph block when it’s selected.

Available options

  • Text alignment: Align text left, center, or right.
  • Bold / Italic: Apply emphasis to selected text.
  • Link: Turn selected text into a link.
  • Inline formatting: Additional text options may appear depending on selection.

Use formatting intentionally. Paragraph text works best when it’s easy to read and visually consistent.

Block settings

While editing the block, the right sidebar panel includes additional block settings that control layout, appearance, and other enhancements.

Use balanced text

Distributes text evenly across multiple lines to create a more balanced appearance. This can be helpful for short paragraphs, callouts, or text used in tighter layouts.

Notes:

  • Balanced Text works on content up to 4 lines in length. Due to browser limitations, if the content exceeds 4 lines, the balanced text will not apply.
  • Balanced Text is best used sparingly. For long-form body copy, natural line wrapping is usually more readable.

Block styles

In Block Settings, the Styles tab includes additional controls to adjust the appearance of the Paragraph block.

Styles

We provide a range of styles aligned with your site’s design system providing options for font sizes allowing you to:

  • Adjust visual hierarchy without switching block types
  • Match design requirements while keeping content semantic

Tip: Choose styles that support readability. Larger or more decorative styles are best reserved for short passages.

Color

Choose from available color options to ensure sufficient contrast and visual consistency. Always ensure text color meets contrast requirements for accessibility.

Padding and margin

Use padding and margin to control spacing around the paragraph and improve layout flow.

Accessibility and content structure

The Paragraph block outputs standard paragraph (<p>) markup, which is the correct semantic choice for body text.

To keep content accessible:

  • Use Paragraph blocks for body content, not headings or decorative text
  • Keep paragraphs concise and focused
  • Avoid relying on color alone to convey meaning

Clear, well-structured paragraphs support screen readers, keyboard navigation, and readability for all users.

Tips for editors

Use paragraphs for content, not layout

Paragraph blocks are for text content, not spacing. Use margin and padding settings — not empty paragraphs — to control spacing.

Avoid over-formatting

Too much bolding, color, or styling can make text harder to read. Use emphasis sparingly and consistently.

Prioritize readability

Readable content benefits everyone. When in doubt, choose simpler styles, sufficient contrast, and comfortable spacing.
